Resources
A starting point for understanding mental health and finding the kind of help that fits what you are going through.
Three Ways to Get Help
Here is a simple way to think about which one fits right now.
If you need someone to talk to right now, feel overwhelmed, or do not know where to start.
If you want an ongoing diagnosis and treatment plan with a psychiatrist, on a schedule that works for you.
If you want to connect with others, learn at your own pace, or are not ready for one-on-one care yet.
A Few Terms, in Plain Language
Understanding these words is often the first step toward getting help.
A normal feeling that becomes a concern when it does not go away, or when it gets in the way of daily life. It can show up as constant worry, restlessness, or a racing heart.
More than ordinary sadness. It often includes a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, low energy, and a low mood that lasts for weeks, not days. It responds to proper care.
The lasting effect of an experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope at the time. It can show up years later, in ways that do not always look like what most people expect.
A pattern of substance use or behaviour that a person struggles to control, even when it causes harm. It is treatable, and recovery is possible.
When to Consider Reaching Out
This is not a diagnosis. It is a general guide to help you decide whether to talk to someone.
Your mood, sleep, or appetite has changed and stayed changed for more than two weeks.
You have lost interest in things that used to matter to you.
You are using alcohol, drugs, or other behaviours to cope, more than you used to.
People close to you have mentioned a change in you that concerns them.
You are having thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life.
WholeLine is free, confidential, and ready to listen. If you or someone else is in immediate physical danger, please contact your local emergency services first.
